Both panels removed from the car. The upper left panel is very wavy all over and badly distorted on the center edge. It appears to be fire damaged. Note how flat and well formed the lower right panel is (no oil on it).
I pop rivited 1/2 inch aluminum angle braces transversely and along the distorted edge on the top of the panel when installed. The transverse brace is about 6.5 inches from the rear (right of image) of the panel. Farther to the front would create interference problems with the crankcase. The edge brace points down to eliminate interference.
This is the underside when installed. You can see the edge brace and the transverse brace pop rivits. While some waviness still exists in the center, it is very small.
